In 2021, a series of 10 mosaics were created for the mediaeval churches of Romney Marsh, which were displayed in St Nicholas Church, New Romney in August. Each mosaic, unique to a specific Romney Marsh church, was designed by Yolanda Houston and made by the community of Romney Marsh. Workshop days were coordinated for the public to make the mosaics by Yolanda and Didier Rochard, and the project was financially supported by The Fifth Continent.

As Romney Marsh has 14 mediaeval churches, JAM felt that it would like to encourage mosaics to be made for the remaining four churches. Following discussions with Yolanda and Didier, the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust agreed to financially support the four final mosaics. Over the Easter period of 2022, a series of further workshops took place, and the final four mosaics were completed.

Over two years, this inspirational project has encouraged the public to create large-scale mosaics, capturing the heritage, wildlife and character of each church, drawing people of all ages into art. The Marsh Churches’ Mosaics Trail is the first time that JAM on the Marsh has visited all 14 of the wonderful mediaeval Romney Marsh churches. The mosaics will be on display daily at each church.
